Our Story

Becky Holman is a self-taught cake artist and owner of Bit of Whimsy Cakes in Richmond, Kentucky

I’ve always had a love for food and baking. Some of my earliest memories are of my Granny’s kitchen. She kept a big bucket of flour in the cabinet and would let me make cookies and cakes any time I wanted. But I never dreamed that my love of baking with her would turn in to the passion and business that I have today.

Being creative is part of my DNA. In 2003, I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interior Design, with a minor in Art Studio, from Eastern Kentucky University. But since I was already married and expecting my first child, I chose not to join the workforce. Fast forward to 2008 – I had two little boys that were turning 4 and 5, and all they wanted was a Star Wars birthday party. But that was at a time when there was no movie in the theater, so none of the grocery stores carried Star Wars cake kits. I ended up ordering a sheet cake with piped light sabers from a bakery in Lexington. It was cute, but being an artistic person, I decided that I should learn how to decorate so I could make my kids birthday cakes. In early 2009, my sister called to ask me how “Betty Crocker” I was feeling. After a long engagement, she and her fiancé had decided to go ahead and get married…in two weeks! She offered to buy all of the pans and tools and let me keep them if I would make her cake. I poured over online articles and Wilton cake decorating magazines. I was an absolute nervous wreck, but the cake turned out great. I posted a photo of it on Facebook and a former classmate, who happened to be a chef, encouraged me to pursue cake decorating. A month later, Bit of Whimsy Cakes was born!

I closed out 2009 having done 7 wedding cakes and quite a few birthday and special occasion cakes. Now I average 50+ weddings per year, and have made hundreds of birthday and special occasion cakes. I am overwhelmed at just how blessed I have been over the last few years. Bit of Whimsy Cakes has become one of the most sought out wedding cake businesses in central Kentucky. I have been honored to receive multiple awards, as well as have my cakes featured in magazines and blogs. I have some big dreams and hopes for this business, and everyday I see those dreams coming true. Life is sweet!
